When to evacuate
  • In a mobile home
    • leave immediately
      • mobile homes are unsafe in high wind/hurricane conditions, no matter how fastened to the ground
  • On the coastline/offshore island/river/flood plain
    • leave as soon as possible
      • these areas could be flooded and/or washed away during a hurricane
  • In a high-rise
    • leave as soon as possible
      • winds are stronger at elavations
        • glass doors/windows can be blown out and/or weaken the structure
What to do
  • stay with friends/family at a low-rise inland hotel/motel outside of flood zones
  • leave early to avoid heavy traffic, blocked roads, and/or blocked bridges
  • put food out for your pet (if you can't take it with you)
    • public shelters and most hotels/motels don't allow pets

    • public shelter
    • hotel
    • motel
  • Or stay with
    • with family/friends far inland (about 50 miles, just to be safe)
  • From anywhere
    • head inland
    • get off the coastline/offshore island
    • get away from the river/other bodies of water/flood zones/flood plains
  • From Mobile, Alabama
    • head inland to get away from the water
    • head north or west to get away from the water
    • get out of Mobile to be sure you won't be (physically) harmed by the hurricane
    • MORE SPECIFICALLY
      • Take Airport Blvd., Old Shell Road, I-65, Route 10, or I-98 west/north out of Mobile.
      • Continue until you are outside a 30-mile radius from Mobile.
